Get excited for a once in a lifetime as The Ticonderoga & Saratoga Committee of the Grand Lodge of New York has planned exciting events to recognize the start of the cannons being transported from Fort Ticonderoga to General George Washington’s headquarters located at the Heights in Dorchester for the relief of the Town of Boston 250 years ago.
In the winter of 1775, General George Washington ordered Colonel Henry Knox to transport captured cannons from Fort Ticonderoga in New York to Boston to help drive out the British. Knox led a daring 300-mile expedition through snow, ice, and rugged terrain, using ox-drawn sleds and rafts to carry 60 tons of artillery. The journey, later called the “Noble Train of Artillery,” took nearly two months and is considered a remarkable feat of military logistics. Once the cannons arrived, Washington positioned them on Dorchester Heights overlooking Boston Harbor. The British, caught off guard, evacuated the city in March 1776, marking a major early victory for the Continental Army.
