Animal Welfare Week

October 3, 2025

Animal Welfare Week, first organized in 1921 by the American Humane Association, stands as a lasting reminder of our responsibility to show compassion and stewardship toward all living creatures. Aligned with World Animal Day on October 4th, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, this observance began as a simple call for kindness to pets and farm animals. Over the decades, it has grown into a global movement that embraces wildlife conservation, environmental responsibility, and the humane treatment of animals across every corner of life. Today, Animal Welfare Week challenges us not only to celebrate the progress made in advancing animal welfare, but also to reflect on our role in carrying these principles forward. For us, as members of a fraternal tradition grounded in virtue, service, and respect, this week calls us to live out our values by extending love, charity, and justice beyond humanity and into all of creation. As we observe this important week, let us be mindful of the ways we can make a difference. Whether by volunteering at a local shelter, supporting conservation efforts, adopting sustainable habits, or simply treating animals with the kindness they deserve.
