Did You Know? - Tun Tavern

On November 10, 1775, the United States Marine Corps was incorporated at the Tun Tavern in Philadelphia. Today is the 238th birthday of the Marine Corps.

Freemasonry also has a significant tie to the Tun Tavern. St. John's Lodge No. 1 in Philadelphia began meeting at the tavern in 1731 or 1732 reportedly. While not the first example of "duly constituted" Masonry in America, this is the precedence by which the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania lays claim to some of the earliest Masonic meetings in colonial America.

Happy Birthday to all United States Marines, especially those who are members of the Fraternity!

More importantly, however, Happy Veteran's Day to all who have served our beloved country in any of the branches of our armed forces. We appreciate the sacrifices you have made, continue to make, and others like you will make in the future to ensure our liberty is maintained.

Grand Master's Class Recap

The day started early, with brethren heeding the warnings to beat the Red Sox parade traffic and arrive as early as possible. Boston-Lafayette Lodge of Perfection opened the day at 8:30am with Master of the Temple, the 9th degree, under the direction of Bro. Robert. H. Brown, 32°, and Ill∴ Bro. Robert F. Doherty, 33°.

The Convocation's business for the day included presenting Bro. Bernard J. Goulding, Jr., 32° with his Meritorious Service Award (MSA) jewel, and Ill∴ Bro. H. Robert Huke, III, 33° with his official 33° jewel.

Valley of Boston Celebrates 200th Year

All year, we've tried to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction in the most appropriate manner possible.

We feel there is no greater way to celebrate than to reward all members for their hard work in support of the Valley.

Thanks to each of you, the Valley of Boston experienced its largest membership class in the past decade at the November 2nd, Grand Master's Class.

There has been no shortage of merit within the Valley in celebrating the 200th Anniversary. If you have sponsored two or more candidates into the Valley during the Anniversary, you will receive an Anniversary jewel from the Valley. Congratulations! Thank you for encouraging others to go Scottish Rite.

Scottish Rite Hits the Airwaves

Early in October, Boston Lafayette Lodge of Perfection Degree Worker Bro. Steve Coan asked Thrice Potent Master, H. Robert Huke, III if he would like to appear on a local cable TV show to promote Scottish Rite’s 200th Anniversary and the Grand Master’s Class. Steve works at local NBC affiliate WHDH and is connected to the Boston media scene. It was scheduled that Bro. Huke would meet WMAS host Juan Lopez on Thursday, October 24th after the Lodge of Perfection Degree rehearsal. Bro. Coan mentions that the host is a Past Master of a local Lodge.

Thinking that “talking heads” can be somewhat boring, Ill∴Huke called Bro. Jim Dill, a degree worker and the former Captain of the Guard for Perfection, and told him about the proposed TV appearance. Bro. Huke mentioned the name of the TV Host...
