A Little Slice of History

It’s election year and that means T.V. ads and radio waves are full of political gobbledygook. In today’s high tech communications age, it is easy for political candidates to get their message out to a large group of people. However, in elections of years past, communicating with the American public was not always this easy and the use of campaign material was very prevalent. These campaign pieces could range from small buttons all the way up to large banners. Many of these items were made by supporters of candidates rather than the candidates themselves, and it just so happens that our very own Scottish Rite Museum and Library has a large collection of these items.

In an exhibit aptly dubbed “Who Would You Vote For?” the Museum in Lexington is placing items from 15 elections on display, with ages ranging from 1844 up until 1946. The exhibit has items from the presidential campaigns of Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, and Theodore Roosevelt. All of the items in this collection will be on public display up until December 10, 2016.
