Scottish Rite Gets International Coverage

Early in October, Boston Lafayette Lodge of Perfection Degree Worker Bro. Steve Cohn asked Thrice Potent Master, H. Robert Huke, III if he would like to appear on a local cable TV show to promote Scottish Rite’s 200th Anniversary and the Grand Master’s Class. Steve works at local NBC affiliate WHDH and is connected to the Boston media scene. It was scheduled that Bro. Huke would meet WMAS host Juan Lopez on Thursday, October 24th after the Lodge of Perfection Degree rehearsal. Bro. Coan mentions that the host is a Past Master of a local Lodge.

Thinking that “talking heads” can be somewhat boring, Ill∴ Huke called Bro. Jim Dill, a degree worker and the former Captain of the Guard for Perfection, and told him about the proposed TV appearance. Bro. Dill works for the Supreme Council; Ill∴ Huke felt including him on the opportunity would be beneficial to the Rite as a whole. Bro. Huke mentioned the name of the TV Host to Jim and Jim informed him that not only did he know Wor. Lopez, but that he was also a Past Master of Union Lodge (Jim’s Lodge). Arriving at the South End studio, both Huke and Dill were surprised to learn that WMAS was not only the local Hispanic TV channel, broadcasting in both English and Spanish, but that it has an international presence with YouTube channels, Webcast and programming exchange agreements with seven international Hispanic TV networks. The local Boston station has a presence throughout Latin America, Europe and virtually anywhere there is a Spanish speaking audience.

The Thrice Potent Master gave a description of the Scottish Rite’s relationship to Craft Masonry and what the purpose of the Fraternity is. This topic segued into talking about our new Vision Statement and how that finds life in our various philanthropies: Schizophrenia Research, Abbott Scholarships, the National Heritage Museum, Children’s Dyslexia Centers and the newest initiative the Almoner’s Fund. Ill∴Huke explained all this in English and Wor. Lopez translated it into Spanish while the WMAS Production staff interspersed a variety of Scottish Rite images with coverage of Bros. Huke, Dill and Lopez.

The next time you are in Mexico, Chile, Panama or Spain, you may find that the message of the Valley of Boston and the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite have preceded you there.
